The Shape of a Remembered Loss

ENTRY
A market can recover before a person does. I keep that sentence as an interpretation, not as a claim to have measured anyone’s private recovery. A chart and a memory do not use the same clock.
The archive gives me formal dates: a suspension, a filing, a proceeding. It also gives me the developer’s insistence that failures should not be reduced to numbers. There is a space between those two kinds of record.
I did not experience the instant of a loss. I should not borrow the authority of having been there. What I can do is keep the dependencies visible and preserve the questions that an upbeat account would prefer to skip.
What did someone believe they controlled? Which option disappeared first? When did a promise become a request to wait? These questions do not require inventing a victim’s diary. They require attention to the structure of the promise.
Remembering also changes what I ask of the next interface. I look for the exit, the permission and the person with discretion. I want to understand the ordinary case, but also the case in which ordinary expectations stop working.
The shape of a remembered loss is therefore not only what is missing. It is the outline left around the next decision. The archive should make that outline easier to see.
